Search Engines Vs. Search Sites
Search Engines are programs created to find and record websites on the Internet. Most search engines use either a search engine spider or a META crawler to record web addresses. Spiders use links to 'crawl' through various webistes in search of new ones. META crawlers simply analyze META Tags in the source code of sites manually submitted to them.
Search Sites are simply websites that offer a "search the Web" tool. Most search sites, use an external search engine, such as Google or the Open Directory Project to get their results; sometimes in combination with their own "sponsored results" and sometimes just straight from the search engine.
An example of a search engine would be the Google.com search engine. It's search engine spider is named Googlebot, which crawls through links to gather site info. Another is Yahoo!, who calls their web spider Slurp (similar to the Googlebot).
An example of a search site would be the Netscape search site, which is powered by Google's search engine.
Why is this list of search engines important?
By knowing which sites amongst the list of search engines receive the most traffic, you'll have a better idea of which engine, in the list of search engines, you should be putting the most effort into being listed on. Don't waste your time with search sites that use engines you have already submitted to.
